The Municipality of Bologna’s City Council commissioned the construction of a government building to house 1,000 employees of the city, previously distributed in 21 different places in the city. The building now stands in an area covering 33,000 sqm, behind the main train station, where there is a produce market. The project main aim was to redevelop the area and reconnect it to the city center.
The design concept for the building is to break a single mass into three blocks intended for various activities. The blocks are different heights, joined by a shading roof, an entrance hall built on four floors and a large public space. The large single roof has the dual function of protecting from solar radiation and give a sense of architectural cohesion to the whole complex. It is the defining element of the design, it folds like a giant “origami” placed on the various buildings above a panoramic terrace.
